I'm sure many of you aren't aware of this because you don't have your Radio Card or the Sound System Manual. "If you lose your Radio Card and the code number, your authorized VOLKSWAGEN Dealer will help you free-of-charge." However, the back of the card specifically states:

My radio card, in my sound system manual (seperate from the owner's manual), was not filled out (ie - didn't have the 4 digit code written down) when I recieved the car. Hopefully that will work for you.ĪLSO, you should NOT pay anything for getting your code number. Vwman's instructions above are top notch so, if you don't have both the SCAN and MODE buttons, follow his instructions for getting and entering your code and use the SEEK button instead to enter it. The right side of the SEEK button has a "greater than" (>) symbol on it. Rather, after entering the 4 digit code I had to press the right side of the SEEK button for 2 or more seconds. I only have the SCAN button, but it was not used to turn my radio back on. I have a 98 jetta and was SUCCESSFUL in restarting my radio out of SAFE mode. If the radio locks up pull the raio from the dash and unhook from power for a few days before trying again. If you made an error, try again, you have three tries before the radio locks up. When you have entered the correct code press and hold the SCAN and MODE buttons together until code disappears and radio comes on. Use button number 2 to change the next number etc. Use button #1 to change the 1 to the correct code, pressing once will change to 2 twice to 3 etc Release the buttons and using the first four station buttons enter the radio code. Procedure - With the power on and SAFE showing on the display, press and hold the MODE and SCAN button together until SAFE changes to 1000. Now that you have the number you can enter it into the radio.

Phone your VW dealer and he should supply the code free of charge when you supply the serial number.

If you cannot find the code you will need to pull the radio from the dash and find the serial number engraved on the side or back of the chassis. Its a costly replacement and its very dangerous.Posted on Tuesday, Septem14:10 GMTIf your VW radio goes on safe mode check your radio owner's manual for the four digit code.

If you don't have one its easy, if you do it may be worth having a pro do it so you can avoid setting it off. If your car has an Airbag equipped you will want to disconnect the battery negative before you start. Make sure you orient the wheel strait up and down so it can go on exactly the same. Crack it loose a few turns and then yank on the wheel. The steering wheel is one big fat socket. To do the signal arm requires removing the steering wheel. Instead of switching the relay on to power up one side of the lights it turns on all 4. The hazard switch has almost an identical wire harness to it without the high beam switch wires. If the lights come on when you test it this way the signal arm could be dead. If they don't come on and the fuses are good the relay is the wrong one. When bridged the lights should come on solid depending on the side. You can use a bit of wire or paper clip to bridge them. Right is black and green, left is black and white. You can also check quick test the switch by unplugging it and bridging the power between the power wire and signal wire for each side of the car.

With the key on you should have power there. If you have a multi meter or test light you can plug one end into the power wire and the other in the ground or to any steel part of the car. This will expose the electrical connection for the signal arm. To get at that part you need to remove the clam shell cover around the steering collum behind the wheel. It wont be the flasher switch it would be the signal arm, but normally one side dies first. If the hazards work then the signals should work.
